Food Bargains - April '10

1. CANNED TOMATOES A good source of vitamins C and A and lycopene, and antioxidant that has been shown to help reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease.

2. BEANS A tasty, cheep and filling food that's high in protein, fiber and iron. Whether you're preparing a kidney bean bake, garbanzo bean soup or black-bean burritos, beans make a tasty and affordable alternative to meat.

3.BROWN RICE One of natures best sources of fiber and vitamins. The outer covering that is removed to make white rice is loaded with nutrients like iron, magnesium, and B vitamins. Cooked Brown rice keeps about seven days in the fridge or the freezer for 6 months.

4.TOFU Rich in high-quality protein and B vitamins but low in sodium. Tofu soaks up the flavors of just about anything it's cooked with. Fried brown rice, vegetables and tofu make a complete dish.

5.FRESH SPINACH full of antioxidants and fiber, spinach is one of the most nutritious and filling spring green. Blend it into your salad mixtures, pile it on sandwiches and add it to stir fries and soups.

Balancing Energy and Your Health- March'10 You know how there are changes people know they want to make in their life but never get around to making until they have too. Well I assist people in taking action to improve the quality of their life in the area of health and well being. Balancing energy is one of the ways to improve your body's functions.With good energy balance you can make other decisions or changes more easily. Chinese herbal medicine is one of the oldest forms of medicine with the earliest known written herbal formulas dating back to the 3rd century BC. Prior to being written down, herbal remedies were passed down by word of mouth and may date back as far as 3500 BC. Chinese medicine teaches that people are either in harmony or out of harmony. Disease is caused by disharmony and cured by restoring harmony to the body. In the East it is believed that we are sustained by energies. It is believed each person is born with a fixed amount, of this energy, which is inherited from our parents. We can nourish it, but cannot add to it. We can also deplete it through unhealthy living. Traditional Chinese Medicine works to unblock the flow of energy if it is stuck or nourish it if it is lacking. Western medicine is looking at the benefits of these modalities and beginning to add them to their tools. This energy is found everywhere in our body; balanced energy protects us from disease and fights it when we get sick. This energy keeps our organs healthy, transforms our food into essential bodily substances, keeps our body warm, and is the source of healthy growth. According to traditional Chinese medicine, blocked or weak energy can prevent our organs from working properly and lead to disease. While energy is found everywhere in our bodies, there are 12 main pathways, called meridians, where life energy flows. The 12 main meridians correspond to the 12 main organs in the body such as liver, heart, lung, stomach, and kidneys. For medicinal purposes, an organ includes the meridian that is associated with it. For example, the liver meridian runs from the big toe up the inside of the leg through the genitals into the liver. Organs also have general body responsibilities. The liver is also responsible for the general flow of energy in the body, digestion, and stable emotions. Treating the liver can fix problems anywhere on the liver meridian as well as the general body functions it is responsible for. This energy can be nourished by massage, acupuncture, yoga, correct diet and digestion, deep breathing, and I also use Quantum Bio-feedback with my clients to balance this energy. With the energy system in balance the body can heal and function at peak effectiveness on its own. When you consult with a naturopathic practitioner who uses one of the modalities above, you will start a journey towards total body health and emotional well being. You will need to meet with him or her more than once to make sure you are experiencing the desired effect or make adjustments to get the best results. At the end of your treatment, your body should be in harmony and have a strong life force
